The General Medical Council (GMC) helps to protect patients and improve medical education and practice in the UK by setting standards for students and doctors. We support doctors in achieving (and exceeding) those standards, and take action when they are not met.

Working in our Data, Research and Insight Hub, the Research Manager will be responsible for developing, managing and ensuring the delivery of key individual research projects as part of the GMC’s research programme. Delivered by a small team of research managers, the research programme provides the GMC with crucial intelligence and insight to inform our policy development and decision-making. We do not fund or undertake medical research and you don’t need previous medical experience.

Although the majority of the research programme is commissioned, a significant minority of projects are undertaken in-house and research managers will be expected to deliver both types of project. We are not looking for advanced expertise in particular methods, but rather for sound general knowledge and experience of a range of research methods.

Research managers will work closely with policy colleagues across the GMC to understand their research needs. The role will also require close working with a range of other GMC staff, including colleagues involved in procurement, information governance, data management and communications as well as external research contractors.

Induction

As a hybrid role, you will be expected to come to the office 1 day a week and work from home for the rest of the week. This may increase later in the year. The GMC is happy to support a range of flexible working options. Flexible working requests will be considered in line with the policy.

Pools

We will also create a pool of appointable Research talent so that we can recruit to future roles quickly to meet the GMC's business needs. If you meet the standard for the appointment, but you are not offered a role in the first instance, you will join the Research pool for six months. If further roles from across directorates become available, we will use the appointable pool from this campaign if applicable.

In return for your hard work, you’ll get

  • £27,708 to £39,788, salary reviewed annually
  • 25 days holiday a year, increasing by one day for each year of service up to a maximum of 30 days, with the option to buy and sell more
  • Flexible hybrid working – working in our Manchester office and from home
  • Discounts at 100s of high street and online stores
  • A generous employer pension contribution of 15%
  • Discounted on site gym membership
  • Private medical insurance
  • Employee assistance programme
  • Cycle to work scheme for those wanting a greener commute
  • Bike lockers and shower facilities
  • a range of learning and development opportunities designed to support your ongoing progression
