Duties and Responsibilities

The Centre for Longitudinal Studies is an ESRC Resource Centre. CLS has responsibility for and manages four of Britain's internationally renowned cohort studies:

•           1958 National Child Development Study (NCDS)

•           1970 British Cohort Study (BCS70)

•           Millennium Cohort Study (MCS)

•           Next Steps (formerly the Longitudinal Study of Young People in England)

The cohort studies follow individuals throughout their lives. They involve multiple surveys, together with other specialised forms of data collection (for example physical measurements and biological samples), and linkages to administrative records. The information collected is broad, covering areas as diverse as education, employment, and income, family and parenting, physical and mental health, and social attitudes. As well as conducting regular surveys of the cohorts, CLS delivers a strong interdisciplinary research programme, as well as programmes of research on survey methodology and statistical methods.

Our academic staff specialise in applying advanced quantitative methods to the cohorts data to produce high quality research and inform policy in areas such as education, health, labour markets, child development, child and adult wellbeing, and ageing.

We are now looking for a Research Fellow (Survey Manager) to join our team. In this role you will be a member of the Survey Manager team, working on the design, development and implementation of the four major longitudinal research studies housed in the Centre.

Working closely with the researchers in the team, you will contribute to the overall design of the cohort studies and the development of data collection sweeps; take a lead role in the design and development of questionnaires and other data collection instruments and work closely with the appointed fieldwork agencies to ensure that all aspects of data collection projects are completed to the highest possible quality.  Opportunities to contribute to the department’s research output, for example by contributing to journal articles linked to developments in survey methodology or substantive issues in the cohort studies, and presenting these at national and international conferences will also be available.

Key Requirements

With an MSc or equivalent experience in a relevant social science discipline, you will also have experience of working on a large scale social survey and a good understanding of ethical issues in survey research.
