Primary Researcher

October 2021

We’re looking to hire a second Primary Researcher to build out the Insight function at our investment firm. You’ll need a passion for uncovering information and finding valuable answers to interesting questions. You’ll be working closely with both an experienced researcher and senior investment professionals. If you’re interested, please send your CV.

About Us:

We’re an independent investment management firm based in London. We’re fundamental investors that focus on mid-sized public companies based in Europe but often doing business all around the world. We launched in 2018 and there are now five people on the Investment Team.

High-quality insight is an integral part of our decision-making process. The Insight function plays a critical role in our investment process, working within our Investment Team on multiple businesses and categories depending on where we’re focussed.

The fact we have a dedicated researcher challenges the status quo in Investment Management. We are one of a handful of firms that see specialist research as a fundamental part of the investment process. We’re all in on the value of genuine, differentiated insight and the professional development of our Researchers.

We’re back in the office but not all the time. You’ll be able to work from home fairly flexibly, if you want to. Our office is in The City.

How the role contributes to our investment process:

Rigorous, evidence-based research is at the heart of how we invest. We pride ourselves on sweating the details, being able to find answers to difficult or complex questions and leaving no stone unturned when it comes to learning about the businesses we’re evaluating.

We work on a huge variety of projects in terms of categories and methods. Since the start of 2021 we’ve spoken to transplant surgeons about organ technology, analytics engineers about the hybrid cloud, fashion consultants about supply chain ethics, UK Government managers about digital transformation, automotive sales consultants about online marketplaces and gaming YouTubers about VR. On top of that, we’ve attended webinars, Future forecasting training classes, trawled Flight Simulator forums and mapped restaurants in major cities.

The role involves working on a project-by-project basis from scoping to analysis and conclusions.  You’ll align on the objectives of each project; help to shape the methodology and execute on your parts of the research plan. That could be finding interesting experts, conducting interviews, hunting for documentation, analysing commentary, browsing message boards or tracking down and analysing available data.

The ideal candidate will:

Be a fast learner. You don’t need to know how to do everything immediately but you should understand the fundamental principles of great research and be passionate about it. This is a mostly (but not entirely) qualitative role and an opportunity to learn new skills.

Be able to shine in a small team. You’ll need to appreciate the specific requirements of your assigned Partner and strike the right balance between self-solving and asking for clarification and direction.

Be a problem solver. You’ll be tasked with finding solutions to a variety of different problems, some easier and more accessible than others – projects often need to be hit from a range of different angles.

Be energised at the thought of adding value. We are our own clients which means you’ll be able to see how your work informs the bigger picture and drives decisions. That also means a lot less Ppt too…

Be ready to embrace autonomy. You’ll be given opportunity to explore your ideas and experiment with new methods.

Be eager to speak up. You’ll need to be prepared for your work and thinking to be interrogated / debated and develop a sense of when to stick to your guns and when to adapt to new information.

Ultimately, this is an opportunity to join a young, dynamic and ambitious business that continues to go from strength to strength and grow into an integral part of our Insight team.

NB: This is an insight focussed role and should not be considered a path to being an investment analyst or similar.

Competitive salary based on experience with opportunity for a performance-based bonus too.

If you’re excited about this opportunity, please apply.
