Scientists – Floods and Water

Employer
Defra
Location
York, Bristol and London
Salary
£29,604 – £37,916
Closing date
25 Mar 2019

This is science with national influence. Defra is creating a great place for living for people in this country. Here, you can improve the countryside and rural economy, enhance food and farming, and protect against natural threats and hazards. You’ll inform flood and water policy as well as public services. And, as part of a Department key to delivering a successful EU exit, much of the work will almost-immediately affect millions of lives.

The role

In essence, you’ll support our Floods and Water research team. In particular, you’ll play a key part in the Joint Water Evidence and Flood & Coastal Erosion Risk Management R&D Programmes. Both involve close collaboration with the Environment Agency, other Defra bodies and the Welsh Government/NRW.

Close working relationships with policy customers (especially in flood management) will be vital, as you outline their evidence needs, set strategies, and follow through on plans – either delivering as part of a multi-disciplined in-house team, or personally commissioning research.

Your background

As well as experience in a science, analytical, social research, operational research or statistical role, it’s important you’ve a 2:2 in a relevant scientific subject.

A natural analyst, you’ll also have a good understanding of the latest methods and techniques. Used to leading small-scale research projects – from initial specifications through to interpretation of results – we’ll also expect you to bring strategic flair, clear-minded organisation and the confidence to collaborate with people of all levels.

Science in Defra

There are around 5,700 Scientists and Engineers and across all of Defra, including epidemiologists, grassland specialists, geographers, biologists, data specialists and chemists.

They often work across disciplines to bring new thinking to our approaches, and tackle issues ranging from air quality to animal diseases. Together, their knowledge and specialist skills underpin key policy and operational decisions, and provide compelling scientific and analytic insights.

Everyone here enjoys a choice of pensions and the potential to work flexibly. But the real draw should be the professional opportunity to influence our approach to the environment during this period of great change.
