Statisticians – Resources and Waste

Employer
Defra
Location
York, Bristol and London
Salary
£29,604 – £37,916
Closing date
25 Mar 2019

This is statistics with national influence. Defra is creating a great place for living for people in this country. Here, you can improve the countryside and rural economy, enhance food and farming, and protect against natural threats and hazards. You’ll inform waste policy as well as public services. And, as part of a Department key to delivering a successful EU exit, much of the work will almost-immediately affect millions.

The role

In essence, you’ll join the statisticians supporting our Resources and Waste team. You’ll examine a wealth of data from sources like the Environment Agency, spanning high-profile subjects like fly-tipping, litter and carrier bags to local authority waste collection.

From the start, your work will appear in regular publications and legislative reporting. You’ll also help to develop metrics and indicators, join research projects, inform the way we formulate and assess policy – and get involved in our Smart Waste Tracking project, which aims to track waste from generation to final treatment.

Your background

A 2:2 degree or MSc is a minimum here, in a numerical discipline with some formal statistical training, like mathematics, economics, psychology or geography (or equivalent).

A natural analyst, you’ll also have a good understanding of the latest methods and techniques. Used to leading small-scale research projects – from initial specifications through to interpretation of results – we’ll also expect you to bring strategic flair, clear-minded organisation and the confidence to collaborate with people of all levels.

Statistics in Defra

It’s an exciting time to join our 100-strong statistical community, not least because of the importance of a successful EU exit. In turn, there is so much change in the way and regularity in which we capture data – our tools and techniques evolve literally year-on-year.

The focus on maintaining trustworthiness, quality and value has also never been greater. Which is why you’ll need to be a team-player, ready to collaborate and open to new methods that steer the decisions behind life-changing outcomes in the wider world.

Everyone here enjoys a choice of pensions and the potential to work flexibly. But the real draw should be the professional opportunity to influence our approach to the environment during this period of great change.
