This is research with national influence. Defra is creating a great place for living for people in this country. Here, you can improve the countryside and rural economy, enhance food and farming, and protect against natural threats and hazards. You’ll inform environmental land policy as well as public services. And, as part of a Department key to delivering a successful EU exit, you’ll have an almost-immediate impact on millions.

The role

In essence, you’ll help to lead the research team supporting our Environmental Land Management Directorate. It’s something that will see you get to grips with the way people engage with, and receive benefits from, the natural environment.

You’ll co-design our 25-Year Environment Plan. And as one of our foremost researchers, we’ll also look to you for develop advice on key policy decisions which will ensure a smooth transition as we leave the EU.

Your background

It’s important you have at least a 2:1 social science degree. One that focused on qualitative and quantitative methods – e.g. research design, data collection, questionnaire design and statistical analysis – as well as study design, hypothesis formation, testing, evaluation, systematic and literature reviews, data interpretation and the application of ethics.

A natural analyst with the gravitas to champion research across Whitehall, you’ll also be inventive in your approach to the work, and the way we deliver it.

Social and Operational Research in Defra

Our Researchers provide insight on policies’ context and impact that drive decisions. You’ll frame the challenge, identify ‘what works’, develop solutions and measure their impact.

Though the EU Exit features prominently, our close-knit community works across all our activities. We apply innovative approaches, harness Big Data and build complex models on everything from air quality and the future of farming to marine pollution. Most recent focuses include systems thinking, MCDA and scheduling techniques.

Everyone here enjoys a choice of pensions and the potential to work flexibly. But the real draw should be the professional opportunity to influence our approach to the environment during this period of great change.
