About the Foreign & Commonwealth Office

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) promotes the United Kingdom's interests overseas, supporting our citizens and businesses around the globe. The FCO has a worldwide network of embassies and consulates, employing approximately 14,000 people in over 270 diplomatic offices. We work with international organisations including the EU, NATO, the United Nations, the UN Security Council and the Commonwealth.

The role of USA & Canada Research Analyst

Your primary role will be providing day-to-day specialist analysis on recent history, politics, bilateral relations, security issues and social trends, producing in-depth research pieces where required. You will often use your discretion to choose the topics of these pieces with little supervision.

You will act as a gateway for HM Government in developing and consolidating contacts with external stakeholders across the UK and the US/Canada. Your research will identify and analyse any significant and influential trends in external research and play a key role in shaping policies.

We want to equip FCO staff with useful information and a broad perspective, giving them the right skills and tools to be flexible, world-class diplomats. We call this Diplomacy 20:20. A big part of this is understanding the work and expertise of other parts of the FCO. From time to time, you’ll be expected to develop and deliver events and training days on US/Canada and Transatlantic relations.

About you

You will need a relevant post-graduate degree and ideally you’ll have significant experience working in or somewhere with a focus on North America or have a relevant undergraduate degree plus substantial experience working on or in North America e.g. in a multilateral organisation, a non-governmental or private sector organisation, think-tank or academic institution. You’ll also need an advanced understanding of US and/or Canadian politics and foreign policy. The ideal candidate will have a background in research and analysis, able to apply sound judgement, approach problems strategically and use their initiative to process large amounts of information quickly and draw accurate and salient conclusions within tight deadlines.
