Scientist, Statistician or Social or Operational Researcher – Floods and Water

This is science, statistics and research with national influence. Defra is creating a great place for living for people in this country. Here, you can improve the countryside and rural economy, enhance food and farming, and protect against natural threats and hazards. You’ll inform policy as well as public services. And, as part of a Department key to delivering a successful EU exit, much of the work will almost-immediately affect millions.

The role

In essence, you’ll support our Floods and Water research team. Whether your experience is in science, statistics or social or operational research – project management expertise will be vital. That’s because you’ll help run a key, £1.3m policy research programme and our 25 Year Environment Plan for flood and water management.

You’ll build strong relationships with policymakers, advising on research needs before finding solutions internally or by commissioning external partners. Depending on your skills, there’ll also be opportunities to join other Floods and Water projects, for example our work on abstraction and flood statistics or future water utility industry costs.

Your background

You don’t need to be an expert in water management; but it’s important you’ve a 2:2 in a relevant scientific subject.

A natural analyst, you’ll also have a good understanding of the latest methods and techniques. Aware of the implications at each stage of a research project – from initial specifications through to interpretation of results – we’ll also expect you to bring strategic flair, clear-minded organisation and the confidence to collaborate with people of all levels.
